Whenever we need to save money, we make a fund. We are saving to go to Disney for the summer. In order for my kids to have spending money, I told them to get creative. My oldest child offered to bring back our recyclables. Her "payment" for the chore is the money she gets back on the deposit. So that is her Disney Fund. She also made a rule to keep half of any money she gets as a gift or earns from now until the trip.
